Why do I need an MOT?

Save Money:
Useful Tips

1. Make sure all of your bulbs are working. Nearly 1 in 5 MOTs fail due to faulty lights, which includes those above the number plate. Check your bulbs regularly. Replacing them is usually a straightforward DIY job.
2. Make sure your car's steering and suspension are checked and serviced according to manufacturers recommendations. Potential problems can be rectified cheaply and in good time before they turn into major repairs and/or your car becomes unsafe to drive.
3. Remove any hanging objects from your rear view mirror, for example air fresheners. They obstruct your forward view and by law the MOT examiner is obliged to fail your car on such a very simple thing!
4. Make sure your windscreen washer fluid is topped up. Your windscreen wipers and washers will be tested.
5. Do your windscreen wipers clear the windscreen effectively? If they don't, new ones can be obtained cheaply from most high street auto factors (eg. Halfords), and replaced at home in a few minutes.
6. Check your windscreen for any cracks or chips. If there are any within the driver's field of view, your car will fail it's MOT test. Most chips can be repaired for free under insurance.
7. Where is your spare wheel? If it's suspended outside, or commonly to the underside of your car, ie. not in the boot, make sure it's tight and secure. Loose spare wheels will cause your car to fail.
8. Monitor the tread and condition of your tyres, or have them checked by a professional. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm covering 75% of the tyre width, all the way around. Don't forget, we can provide you with a competitive tyre quote if any need replacing.
Beware cheap MOT deals

No False Repairs. GUARANTEED

We value our VOSA-approved status and will only advise you when components have genuinely failed or should be replaced or repaired sometime soon.

Some MOT centres offer cheap MOTs and focus on finding faults with your car. This can be an attempt to sell over-priced servicing, parts and repairs which may not even necessary.

THE NEW MOT CERTIFICATE

Since 16 October 2011 a new style of certificate is issued for MOT tests.

MOT certificates and refusals are now printed on plain paper in a landscape format instead of the previous green (or red) pre-printed coloured form.

Changes to the certificates are part of VOSA's ongoing campaign to lower costs and wastage.

The new certificate includes the important advisory information on the same sheet, giving your car a full record of tasks that will need to be completed in the near future.
